Earlier this month, an 18-year-old Black woman was arrested in the Bronx. Hours later, authorities found her unconscious in her holding cell, and she ultimately died. According to a medical examiner, the teen died by suicide after hanging herself with her sweater, but her family isn’t buying it, and they’ve hired famed civil attorney Ben Crump to see them through their pursuit of transparency and justice.

Source: Thomasina Cheatham via Facebook / Thomasina Cheatham via Facebook

According to Gothamist, Bronx native Saniyah Cheatham was pronounced dead on July 5, after she was taken to Lincoln Hospital from the New York Police Department’s 41st Precinct stationhouse in Longwood, where multiple officers performed CPR on her while waiting for an ambulance to arrive. It’s unclear what the circumstances were surrounding Cheatham’s arrest, but the New York Times reported last week that she was booked on an assault charge.

On Monday, the Cheatham’s family, joined by Crump, held a press conference outside the stationhouse, where they accused authorities of being less than forthcoming with information on Cheatham’s death outside of the ruling that she killed herself. Crump said during the conference that he planned on “exploring every possible legal remedy to get to the truth.”

“It is a hypocritical dynamic where you have the video, you know what happened, but you’re gonna make this family have to go through all kinds of hoops and hurdles to find out what happened to their daughter,” he said.

Cheatham’s family previously denied statements made by Bronx police officials that the teen hanged herself — statements that, according to the Times, were made before the medical examiner made an official cause of death ruling. Her mother, Thomasina Cheatham, said her daughter was in good spirits on the Fourth of July, the day she was arrested, when she was at a barbecue with relatives. Thomasina also noted that she was not wearing a sweater at the time as it was July.

“ I just want to know what happened to Saniyah,” Thomasina said Monday, describing her daughter as “bright, independent, smart and outgoing.”

“That was my only daughter and she didn’t deserve this.”

Now, the family seems to be more open to the possibility that Cheatham, indeed, hung herself in her cell, but there’s still the issue of the jail surveillance video that they’re reportedly not being allowed to see.

“We’re not saying it’s impossible, but it does make you scratch your head,” Crump said. “It is not adding up to the family. That’s why they want to see the video.”

Crump’s office also released the following statement on Sunday:

“Saniyah Cheatham was an 18-year-old with her whole life ahead of her. I commend her mother, Thomasina, for her courage in standing up to demand the truth. How could this happen to a young woman in police custody? Why wasn’t her safety ensured by those charged with her care? No mother should be left in the dark after her child dies in police custody. We demand full transparency and accountability for this grieving family.”

Cheatham’s case is eerily similar to that of Sandra Bland, who was found dead in her jail cell in Waller County, Texas, in 2015, after a confrontation with a police officer during a traffic stop.

When Black people die under mysterious circumstances, especially while in the custody of law enforcement, and family and community members are told it was a suicide, it’s unreasonable to expect it to be accepted without full and swift transparency.

Rest well, Saniyah Cheatham, and may you and your family receive justice.

For the Cheatham family, the July 4th holiday was initially a time of joy and celebration. The family had gathered for a cookout, where 18-year-old Saniyah Cheatham was reportedly healthy and in good spirits. The evening took a tragic turn only hours later after the family received news that Cheatham had died while in NYPD custody.

Thomasina Cheatham told CBS News her daughter, Saniyah, was her normal self during a Fourth of July cookout at Crotona Park. “We [were] hanging out, having a good time. ‘Mommy, I love you,’ giving me a kiss. And now to wake up that she’s no longer here with us, it’s really sickening.”

At some point after the cookout, the NYPD arrested Saniyah Cheatham for allegedly being involved in a fight. She was taken to the 41st Police Precinct in the Longwood neighborhood of the Bronx shortly before midnight. Anonymous NYPD officials with knowledge of the case told the New York Times that at about 12:15 a.m. Saniyah hanged herself with the sweater she was wearing while in her cell. An NYPD official told the Times she had only been in the cell for two minutes when she hanged herself.

In a statement sent to CBS, the NYPD said they called for Emergency Medical Services at about 12:40 a.m. and attempted CPR while awaiting medical help. Saniyah Cheatham was transferred to Lincoln Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. It’s unclear if there were any other detainees in the cell, if anyone witnessed the incident, or if Saniyah called for help.

“How could that happen in a precinct? Was anybody watching her? Was she calling out for help?” Thomasina asked in an interview with CBS.

The NYPD has said that the Force Investigation Division is looking into the circumstances surrounding Saniyah Cheatham’s death. Thomasina is hopeful that security cameras in the jail and the medical examiner’s autopsy will give a clearer understanding of what led to her daughter’s death.

“The cameras should show exactly what happened…I’m praying that it does. I’m really praying. This is very heartbreaking to me and my family. That was my only princess. I have four boys and one girl. And we just … we just [are] really heartbroken right now,” Thomasina Cheatham told CBS.

Saniyah Cheatham’s death and alleged suicide have shocked many of her close friends and family. They say she enrolled at Bronx Community College and worked so she could save up money to live on her own. Growing up, Saniyah was active in the church, which initially caused her to struggle with her sexuality. When she came out as gay to her older brother, he accepted her with no hesitation.

“That’s what made our bond really close,” her older brother told the Times. “She knew all of me, and I knew all of her. She just got me.”

Ember Baez, Saniyah Cheatham’s friend and former partner, told the Times, “Everyone who has spoken to her recently knows she’s been happy. So when I heard this happened, I called her multiple times to see if it was real, and her phone just kept going straight to voicemail.”

The alleged details of Saniyah Cheatham’s death bear a striking similarity to Sandra Bland, a Black woman who died while in police custody. Bland was arrested during a traffic stop and taken into custody at Waller County Jail in Texas. She was unable to post the $5,000 cash bail, and after three days in custody, she allegedly hanged herself in her cell. While Bland’s death was officially ruled a suicide, there has long been skepticism over the official narrative.

Bland’s death while in police custody helped bring more awareness to the #SayHerName campaign, which was launched in December 2014 by the African American Policy Forum (AAPF) and the Center for Intersectionality and Social Policy Studies (CISPS) “to cut through this disturbing reality and resist the invisibility of Black women, girls, and femmes by telling their stories of police violence.”

From Freddie Gray, Marvin Scott III, Noni Battiste-Kosoko, and Ta’Neasha Chappell, there has been an alarming trend of Black people dying in police custody in the years since Sandra Bland’s death. Sadly, Saniyah Cheatham’s name is now added to that list.

Antwan Lindsey was 45 years old on July 8, 2023, when a Franklin County, Ohio sheriff’s deputy gunned him down at a local apartment complex. According to ABC 6, someone notified the deputy, who was working security duty at a Walgreens drug store, that Lindsey was allegedly threatening people with a gun. It would later be revealed that the person who notified the deputy of the alleged threats was also in the apartment with an angry Lindsey, who believed that someone had stolen his vehicle. A subsequent investigation determined that the car was towed away, not stolen. The responding deputy exchanged brief gunfire with Lindsey before Columbus police responded to the scene, where an officer employed his taser to end the standoff without bloodshed.

However, the Ohio Attorney General’s Office’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation report stated that it was only after Lindsey’s body “stiffened up” and he was incapacitated that officers fired 38 total rounds at a man who had already surrendered. Don’t take our word for it; here is the text directly from the BCI report (names of the officers involved were redacted, not by us, but by BCI as reported to ABC6) :

–––– –––––– and Officer Cook repeatedly told Lindsey to put his hands up, but he did not comply. witnessed Lindsey stick his middle finger up (“flipping the bird”) at officers and Officer Cook heard Lindsey state, “F**k you” and “F**k you ni**a, I’m not doing s**t” during the encounter. –––––– –––––– decided to deploy his Taser in an attempt to take Lindsey into custody. ––––– –––––– advised Officer Cook he would be deploying a Taser and Officer Cook acknowledged the decision. ––––– –––––––announced “Taser…Taser… Taser” and deployed his Taser which made a “popping” sound. The Taser prongs made contact with Lindsey’s left side and ––––– ––––– observed him “stiffen up.” Immediately following the Taser deployment, gunfire erupted from within the hallway of the lower level.

The entire incident was captured on body camera and released to the public. It is very graphic, and some may find it disturbing. Click HERE if you wish to view all 20 minutes of footage.

The family’s lawsuit keys in on the BCI admission that the 38 rounds were not fired until after the taser had been deployed and appeared to have been effective. That said, it should come as no surprise that a Franklin County grand jury declined to indict any of the involved officers, leaving the family to seek financial justice on their own.

10TV notes that this lawsuit, which is for $75,000, isn’t confined to just the officers who fired their guns; it specifically names the City of Columbus, Police Chief Elaine Bryant, Public Safety Director Kate McSweeney-Pishotti, Sergeant Jonathon Goodrich, the four officers who fired at Lindsey, and more than 15 other officers and staff members.

BOSSIP will continue to monitor this lawsuit as it progresses.

James Gunn’s highly anticipated Superman film was released Friday, and it officially kicks off his new DC Universe on the film front.

As fans run to theaters to see Clark Kent transform into the Man of Steel, many are eager to spot familiar faces in the film. The film includes key cameos you won’t want to miss.

Read on for more on who to look out for in the new Superman film as cool additions to the cast as cameos.

Is Bradley Cooper in the new ‘Superman’ film?

Yes, Bradley Cooper is in James Gunn’s Superman. Though the film kicks off three years into Superman’s tenure as a superhero in Metropolis, some of the superhero’s backstory is explored. A scene in the movie shows Superman, who in the reboot is played by David Corenswet, watching old footage of his parents in his Arctic base (which is referred to as the Fortress of Solitude, as the superhero is in need of just that). In the footage, Bradley Cooper plays Jor-El, Superman’s father. Westworld actor Angela Sarafyan appears alongside him as Lara Lor-Van, Superman’s mother.

John Cena appears as Peacemaker

In the film, wrestler-turned-actor John Cena reprises his role of Peacemaker, which he first portrayed in Gunn’s 2021 film The Suicide Squad, and currently in the HBO Max series, which has a second season coming. Peacemaker is shown appearing on a television talk show after the citizens of Metropolis turn their backs on Superman. On the talk show, Peacemaker discusses Superman’s damaged reputation.

Does Milly Alcock debut in James Gunn’s ‘Superman’?

Yes, Milly Alcock does appear at the tail end of the movie. Perhaps most thrilling to fans is Alcock’s cameo in Superman as Supergirl, Superman’s cousin. She makes a splashy appearance toward the end of the film, crash-landing into the Fortress of Solitude as Superman recuperates after freeing Metropolis from Luthor’s pocket universe. She thanks him for taking care of Krypto, a mischievous super dog under Superman’s care for the duration of the film, revealing the pet is her own.

Supergirl also says that she’s able to get drunk on other planets with a red sun because it mutes her Kryptonian powers.

Alcock’s cameo teases the DC Universe’s upcoming movie Supergirl. Based on Tom King’s Woman of Tomorrow series, the film will follow Supergirl as she travels across the galaxy and seek revenge, with Krypto by her side. Supergirl hits theaters in June 2026.

You would think that Robert Griffin III had learned his lesson speaking on the alleged “hate” that Angel Reese has for her caucasian colleague Caitlin Clark but alas, here we are again. RGIII previously faced the wrath of the wifi when he took to Twitter (we’re never, ever calling it “X”) to present “evidence” of Reese’s deep personal disdain for Clark by using video clips of the two women competing hard to win in a professional sport, something Griffin might not be familiar with.

Recently, Reese was announced as one of the featured covers this year’s wildly popular NBA2k26 video game and per usual, the racist trolls went out of their way to publish some of the most racist and misogynistic reactions to the news. Those reactions included photoshopping Reese off the cover in place of a monkey. So original.

Despite his past transgressions, RGIII attempted to come to Reese’s defense by posting a lengthy tweet that unnecessarily doubled-down on this past claim that Reese hates Clark. Additionally, he accused Reese of promoting violence against his family, sexual assault against his children, and harassment of his family and friends…

With “defenders” like these, who needs haters? If RGIII thinks that Angel’s video repost put his family in mortal danger, what does he think Angel Reese has been dealing with when men like him stoke the fires of racial tension? The call is coming from inside the house! For her part, Reese opted for a more succinct response to the former ball disrespectful diatribe…

Things got so bad for RGIII that Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s daughter Bernice King had to fire up her Twitter machine to tell him to STFU and chill TF out. Not in those words exactly but the energy was clearly there.

We don’t expect Robert Griffin III to learn anything or reflect on his actions and that only goes to show that former ESPN writer Rob Parker was always right, the guy is just a cornball brotha.

Last summer, on July 6, we learned of a new reason for the police to kill an unarmed Black person: a pot of hot water.

Sonya Massey, then 36, had called 911 when she suspected an intruder at her home in Springfield, Ill.

According to an Illinois State Police summary of her shooting death, when police arrived, deputies did indeed see a car at Massey’s home that looked broken into. After knocking on the door, the two officers claimed they found her “distraught and not thinking clearly.” But instead of treating her as a person in need of help, she was ultimately treated as a criminal, and after an exchange, subsequently executed.

Sangamon County Deputy Sean Grayson, reportedly stood roughly 10 feet away from Massey, and motioned to a pot on the stove in her kitchen. At one point, Grayson responds to Massey, “Getting away from your hot, steaming water.” In response, the summary says she repeats twice, “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus.”

Grayson greeted that with, “I swear to God. I will shoot you right in your f—— face.”

And so he did, but not before she dropped the pot and crouched below a line of cabinets with her hands in the air after apologizing as he drew his gun and pointed it at her.

Though she did get back up and grabbed the pot again in defense, when she threw the water, Grayson’s response was to fire his gun three times—one of the bullets went directly into her face.

If this does not sound barbaric enough, after the shooting, when the second deputy in the home claimed he planned to retrieve a medical kit, Grayson told him not to. The other deputy did anyway and remained with Massey until medical help arrived. Grayson never bothered to help the distressed woman he was sent there to help, but ended up shooting in the face.

He has since been indicted on charges of first-degree murder, and more recently, a new pre-trial date has been set, where he will stand trial on Oct. 20 for the murder of Sonya Massey.

Protesters gather in Washington Square Park and marched towards Times Square to call for justice in the police killing of 36-year-old Sonya Massey in her home, Illinois on July 25, 2024 in New York, United States. Source: Anadolu

Massey’s family attended the brief pre-trial hearing before Seventh Circuit Court Presiding Judge Ryan Cadagin last month.

Sontae Massey, a cousin of Sonya Massey, told reporters, “We’re going to be at all of the hearings. They could have a hundred hearings between now and Oct. 20. We’ll be at each and every one of them.”

In February, the family reached a $10 million settlement with officials in Sangamon County.

As much as they seek justice for her killing, however, a separate interview highlights that beyond her victimhood, Sonya Massey was a mother and a loving person who has left behind a hole in the hearts of family, friends, and the people in her community.

Speaking with NewsChannel20 in Springfield, Ill., ahead of the one-year anniversary of her shooting, Massey’s family described her as “a hard-working mother who ensured her kids were well taken care of.”

Indeed, her son, Malachi Hill-Massey, spoke fondly of his late mom in an interview with the Springfield State Journal-Register ahead of his high school graduation.

“She showed me ways of her being caring,” Hill-Massey explained. “She’s a helper, a carer, for everybody. She would help somebody before she would help herself.”

He said he finished school early “for his mom” and Sonya’s mother, Donna Massey, said in the same interview, “We’re so happy that he’s made his mama proud. We can feel her shining down on us. I know she’s happy.”

And Malachi has a plan: he will attend trade school for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, citing his mom as his motivation to succeed.

“I think about it all the time,” he said about her killing. “I’m young. I need my mom still.”

And as a grieving son, I related to him saying he is following the trial “as much as [he] can,” but “I’m still grieving. It’s a wearing process. I’ve lost people before, but when it’s someone you’re with literally every single day, someone I talked to every single day, it’s different.”

Source: Sangamon County Jail / Sangamon County Jail

As for her shooter, Sean Grayson, Malachi said: “You can’t say it’s not senseless. You were supposed to be protecting her. How could you turn your gun on her? Why would you even think about lethal force before a taser? He could have tased my mom. He could have pepper-sprayed her, anything before shooting her.”

As frustrating as her loss remains, I take heed to her cousin Sontae Massey’s caution that while the world remembers Sonya as “the tiny woman speaking to the police in the final moments of her life, she’s so much more than that.”

“I miss her everyday,” Sontae shared. “I miss the Sonya that, I would go over to mom’s house, and we would crack jokes, and she would make fun of me and she would share a laugh with me. I miss that Sonya.”

The family said that they feel the hype of Sonya’s name has started to die down, thus doing interviews like this one, helps them do everything in their power to keep her name alive.

That is admirable, especially given the circumstances, but let us do our part to help keep her name alive, too.

We say her name not only as a victim of police brutality but as a loving mother, daughter, cousin, and friend who brightened the lives of the people around her and, like far too many Black people in this country, continue to have their light unjustly and untimely dimmed.

There’s a case out of New York drawing Sandra Bland comparisons.

If the police, especially the NYPD, are telling you a story, your best bet is to second-guess everything they say, hire the best attorney that you can afford, pressure them publicly, and be prepared to fight. Contrary to the jingoistic mantras that some would have you believe, justice isn’t given in America; it’s paid for in blood, tears, and sweat equity.

According to a NBC NewYork report, the NYPD has told a grieving family that 18-year-old Saniyah Cheatham took her own life while in police custody last weekend. Cheatham had just celebrated the July 4 holiday with her family in Corona Park (Queens) when she got into a physical altercation with her girlfriend that led to both women being arrested. Around 12:40 p.m. the next morning, police say they found Cheatham lying lifeless in her cell and allegedly attempted to perform CPR to no avail.

The family ain’t trying to hear none of that.

Said Saniyah’s mother Thomasina Cheatham, “She was happy and I was happy to see her.” The NYPD told Thomasina that Saniyah had used a sweater to choke herself to death, but the mother says her daughter did not have a sweater that day, which stands to reason because…it’s July…in New York.

“What happened to her? I don’t believe she killed herself,” said Thomasina. “Maybe she said something they didn’t like, they roughed her up. I don’t believe my daughter committed suicide.”

The medical examiner has not yet determined a cause of death, and the family is demanding that all security footage from the jail be released to the public, and the body camera video of the arresting officers be released as well.

Bronx News 12 spoke to Saniyah’s brother, Javan, who said that even news of her arrest was shocking because his sister was not a violent person or the type to initiate a fight.

“Saniyah’s not really a fighter,” Javan said. “She would rather talk to you first than hit you or start a fight with you or anything like that.”

Something ain’t right and the math ain’t mathing. We will be following this story closely and will provide updates as they become available.
