Rodney Hinton Jr. and his family are fighting for his freedom, and that takes money. Oftentimes, the average person doesn’t have cash on hand to properly defend themselves in court. When said person is Black, the community is inclined to help them get the best opportunity to get fairness from an unfair system.

BOSSIP has been watching this case closely, partly because the circumstances surrounding the alleged murder of Hamilton County sheriff’s deputy Larry Henderson have brought about larger conversations about justice and the growing societal dissent. Hinton stands accused of fatally striking Deputy Henderson with his car the day after 18-year-old Ryan Hinton, Rodney’s son, was shot and killed the day prior by a Cincinnati Police Department officer. Although Deputy Henderson was not responsible for Ryan’s death, Hinton stands accused of essentially taking revenge against him out of anger.

According to WCPO, Deputy Henderson’s wife has filed a lawsuit against Hinton and his family for crowdfunding $100,000 and allegedly breaking Ohio public policy law. Lorena Henderson is accusing the family of “public status and notoriety gained solely through his criminal act of killing Deputy Henderson” and doing so has “caused extreme emotional distress”. The suit also claims that the crowdfunding effort is against the state policy that bans intentionally profiting from violent crimes.

“Through crowdfunding efforts, they have sought to profit from the very crime that took a devoted public servant from his loved ones, raising over $100,000 by leveraging the notoriety of this heinous act,” Zachary Gottesman, Henderson’s attorney, said in a statement. “This is not only a violation of Ohio’s public policy against profiting from criminal conduct but an affront to the principles of justice and decency.”

When news of the case first broke, thousands of dollars poured into sites like GoFundMe and were promptly removed after the company cited a policy that forbids funding for people charged with violent crimes. GiveSendGo, however, doesn’t have an anti-democracy policy that presumes guilt…

“Our platform exists to allow individuals to raise funds for personal needs, including legal defense and family support, especially in times of crisis. Every person is presumed innocent until proven guilty, and we believe people should have access to their communities during such moments. We aim to uphold that freedom — even in challenging and emotionally charged situations,”

Moreover, Hinton has not been convicted of any crime, and he has pleaded not guilty to all charges. Lorena Henderson can be mad all she wants, but Rodney Hinton Jr. deserves a fair trial like all people.

Earlier this month, an 18-year-old Black woman was arrested in the Bronx. Hours later, authorities found her unconscious in her holding cell, and she ultimately died. According to a medical examiner, the teen died by suicide after hanging herself with her sweater, but her family isn’t buying it, and they’ve hired famed civil attorney Ben Crump to see them through their pursuit of transparency and justice.

According to Gothamist, Bronx native Saniyah Cheatham was pronounced dead on July 5, after she was taken to Lincoln Hospital from the New York Police Department’s 41st Precinct stationhouse in Longwood, where multiple officers performed CPR on her while waiting for an ambulance to arrive. It’s unclear what the circumstances were surrounding Cheatham’s arrest, but the New York Times reported last week that she was booked on an assault charge.

On Monday, the Cheatham’s family, joined by Crump, held a press conference outside the stationhouse, where they accused authorities of being less than forthcoming with information on Cheatham’s death outside of the ruling that she killed herself. Crump said during the conference that he planned on “exploring every possible legal remedy to get to the truth.”

“It is a hypocritical dynamic where you have the video, you know what happened, but you’re gonna make this family have to go through all kinds of hoops and hurdles to find out what happened to their daughter,” he said.

Cheatham’s family previously denied statements made by Bronx police officials that the teen hanged herself — statements that, according to the Times, were made before the medical examiner made an official cause of death ruling. Her mother, Thomasina Cheatham, said her daughter was in good spirits on the Fourth of July, the day she was arrested, when she was at a barbecue with relatives. Thomasina also noted that she was not wearing a sweater at the time as it was July.

“ I just want to know what happened to Saniyah,” Thomasina said Monday, describing her daughter as “bright, independent, smart and outgoing.”

“That was my only daughter and she didn’t deserve this.”

Now, the family seems to be more open to the possibility that Cheatham, indeed, hung herself in her cell, but there’s still the issue of the jail surveillance video that they’re reportedly not being allowed to see.

“We’re not saying it’s impossible, but it does make you scratch your head,” Crump said. “It is not adding up to the family. That’s why they want to see the video.”

Crump’s office also released the following statement on Sunday:

“Saniyah Cheatham was an 18-year-old with her whole life ahead of her. I commend her mother, Thomasina, for her courage in standing up to demand the truth. How could this happen to a young woman in police custody? Why wasn’t her safety ensured by those charged with her care? No mother should be left in the dark after her child dies in police custody. We demand full transparency and accountability for this grieving family.”

Cheatham’s case is eerily similar to that of Sandra Bland, who was found dead in her jail cell in Waller County, Texas, in 2015, after a confrontation with a police officer during a traffic stop.

When Black people die under mysterious circumstances, especially while in the custody of law enforcement, and family and community members are told it was a suicide, it’s unreasonable to expect it to be accepted without full and swift transparency.

Rest well, Saniyah Cheatham, and may you and your family receive justice.

My daughter came into this world four months too soon.

For four months, we lived beneath the blinking lights and beeping machines of the neonatal intensive care unit at one of the best children’s hospitals in the United States. Every single day, I watched her chest rise and fall with fierce determination—a rhythm more sacred than any song I’d ever heard. And every single day as I was healing, body torn and spirit shaken, I kept watch. Wondering if she would survive the night.

My then-husband and I both worked full-time. We had what people call “good jobs.” We had private insurance. We had done things the so-called “right” way. And still, my daughter’s and my hospital bills climbed toward hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Medicaid saved us.

It stepped in where our private insurance fell short. It covered the care that helped my daughter live. It gave me space to recover from the complications of her birth. And because I qualified for Medicaid, I also qualified for WIC, which ensured there was food in the fridge and formula in the cabinet when I couldn’t nurse. Without those programs, I would still be in debt today, almost twenty years later. I might have lost our home. I honestly don’t know how I would’ve made it back to myself.

Public assistance didn’t just help us survive; it helped us recover and thrive. It gave us a second chance to live with dignity.

So when I hear politicians talk about “lazy welfare moms” or “irresponsible spending,” I think of mothers like me. I think of babies like mine. And I know they’re flat out lying.

The “Big Beautiful Bill,” passed July 3, 2025, is everything but beautiful. It is treacherous. It slices through Medicaid and shreds the very supports that keep families like mine afloat. It does this all while handing over $1.5 trillion in tax cuts to billionaires and corporations.

For Black women, especially, this bill is not just bad policy; it’s a blueprint for abandonment and deep harm. The bill includes the largest Medicaid cuts in U.S. history. That’s not just numbers on a page; that’s a death sentence for some of us.

More than 65% of Black births are covered by Medicaid. And still, Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. When a mother hemorrhages and dies because she couldn’t afford prenatal care, the state will call it a tragedy. When a baby is born too early because her mother had to choose between groceries and gas to get to the clinic, it will be called unfortunate. But we know better.

None of what is coming will be mere misfortune. It will be the result of intentional policy. It will be neglect baked into law.

The Big Beautiful Bill also targets Planned Parenthood, stripping Medicaid funding from clinics that offer abortion services, even when the money is used for preventive care. The bill doesn’t just go after abortion—it threatens access to cancer screenings, STI testing, prenatal visits, and birth control, especially for low-income patients who rely on these clinics as their only source of care.

Over 2.4 million people, many of them Black and Brown women, rely heavily on these facilities for reproductive care. And when those clinics close, Black women will be hit hardest. We already die from cervical cancer at rates 65% higher than white women. Denying access to reproductive care isn’t just cruel; for Black women, it is a calculated decision — a quiet, systemic verdict on who is allowed to heal and who is left to die.

Another way this atrocious bill harms Black women is in how it expands work requirements for SNAP, demanding that recipients log 80 hours per month of work, volunteering, or training, even as costs rise and wages stagnate. But let’s be clear: Black women are already among the most active labor groups in this country. Many of us are working multiple jobs while caring for elders and children. We’re doing the most with the least, and still, we are asked to prove our worth, over and over again.

We know this bill isn’t about encouraging work. It’s about punishing poverty. It’s about turning hunger into a test and bureaucracy into a weapon. And we also know who will be hurt most. Nearly 1 in 4 Black children rely on SNAP to eat.

Those hungry children will learn early that the leaders of this country see their needs as a burden. Hungry mothers will skip meals so their children don’t have to. And too many hardworking families will internalize their struggles, believing their hunger is a personal failure, rather than the result of a government that has turned its back on their most basic needs. SNAP doesn’t just fill plates. It protects dignity. And when you take it away, you don’t just cause hunger—you cause harm that can echo for generations.

A Bronx mother is demanding answers after the NYPD said her 18-year-old daughter allegedly died by suicide just hours after being taken into custody over the July 4th holiday weekend.

According to CBS News, police found Saniyah Cheatham unconscious inside her jail cell at the 41st Precinct on Longwood Avenue in the Bronx just before 1 a.m. Saturday. Several police officers performed CPR on the young woman before she was later pronounced dead at Lincoln Hospital.

Cheatham, a Bronx Community College student, had just been spending time with family at a Friday cookout in Crotona Park, her mother said.

“We [were] hanging out, having a good time. ‘Mommy, I love you,’ giving me a kiss,” Thomasina Cheatham said, per CBS News.

A fight with her girlfriend led to Saniyah Cheatham’s arrest

According to the family, Cheatham and her girlfriend got into a physical fight after the cookout, which led to their arrest. Officers later administered CPR measures on her after being found lifeless and unresponsive in her cell around 12:40 a.m., NBC News reported.

While the NYPD’s Force Investigation Division investigates Cheatham’s death, her mother disputes the claim that her daughter died by suicide.

“What happened to her? I don’t believe she killed herself,” Thomasina said, according to NBC News. “Maybe she said something they didn’t like, they roughed her up. I don’t believe my daughter committed suicide.”

The NYPD said Cheatham used a sweater to asphyxiate herself, but Thomasina noted she was wearing different clothing the last time she saw her.

“She did not have on a sweater that day,” she said.

On Tuesday, the family demanded that the NYPD release surveillance footage from inside the precinct and that the arresting officers turn over their body-worn camera video.

“Oh she hung herself on the bars. I would like to see that,” Thomasina said.

As of now, the medical examiner has not determined an official cause of death following an examination on Sunday.
