If you love wearing elegant pearl earrings, some social media users believe they might be hurting your chances at finding love, while others argue that the idea is complete nonsense.

As YouTuber Ki_Smith explained in her June 23 video, the viral “Pearl Earring Theory” suggests that wearing pearl earrings can make some men feel intimidated or hesitant to approach you. The idea is that pearl earrings give the impression you’re a “woman of a certain caliber” or high maintenance, signaling that only men who see themselves on that level should be the first to make a move.

Ki didn’t seem too convinced by the theory, joking that she needed to “start wearing pearls” to find the perfect match.

However, TikTok star Ericka Dane hinted that she believes there may be some truth to the theory.

“Am I single by choice or is it because of the pearl earring theory?” the influencer penned in a video that captured her pulling her hair back to reveal small pearl stud earrings.

A few ladies agreed with Ericka, including one user who responded, “I’ve been wearing pearls since grade 10 and I can tell you that it is true!”

There’s no science to back up whether the Pearl Earring Theory is true.

While this idea has gained popularity online, there is no scientific evidence to support it. Vice highlightedthat the theory is more of a fun, anecdotal narrative than a fact-based concept. Still, social media users are divided. Some believe pearls contribute to failed romantic connections, while others dismiss the idea entirely.

TikTok star Peyton Mikolayek told fans on June 23 that she was “proud” to wear her pearls and confirmed she has a boyfriend, shutting down the theory as completely “not real.”

Here’s the deal. While your personal style—such as the jewelry you wear—can impact first impressions, studies show that traits like confidence, communication skills, and especially emotional intelligence play a much more significant role in how women are perceived.

“One of the main reasons emotional intelligence is so attractive is that it allows a woman to navigate conflicts with grace and empathy,” noted relationship expert Anastasia Maisuradze in a blog for Soul Matcher published Jan. 27. “Men find attractive women who are able to communicate their feelings effectively without escalating tensions. For example, in a disagreement, a woman with high EQ can express her feelings calmly and listen to her partner’s perspective without getting defensive or overly emotional,” she added. “This creates a safe space for open dialogue and resolution, making the relationship feel more secure and nurturing.”

In the end, the Pearl Earring Theory is more of an amusing internet myth than a genuine obstacle to relationships. As one commenter reassured Ericka, “God will give us what we wanted and more in the right time. Trust him.”

Matchmakers around the world say they are working over time to help lonely singles find love as many believe today’s dating apps just aren’t cutting it. Matchmakers help people find romantic partners by using a combination of personal interviews, psychology, relationship coaching, and networking. People are finding that this approach may give better results on their search for love compared to the rigid algorithms used by popular dating apps.

“Matchmaking gives modern daters something they desperately need: structure, support, and truth,” shared Arlene Washburn, a certified matchmaker, during an interview with DatingNews.com on April 23. “We hold up a mirror.”

While dating apps measure success through engagement — swipes, messages, and matches — matchmakers focus on real outcomes, humanizing the dating experience by establishing real relationships, commitments, and hopefully marriages. For many people navigating modern dating, that distinction matters more than ever, added Washburn.

Unfortunately, the real goal of finding a meaningful connection can easily get lost in the endless cycle of swiping, tweaking profiles, and chasing the perfect match. Amanda Harrigan, founder of the Perth-based matchmaking service HYTCH, told The West Australian, on June 23, that many of her clients are feeling increasingly “overwhelmed” by dating apps, exhausted by the constant swiping and repetitive messaging just to spark a basic connection.

“It’s like trying to find a needle in a haystack,” she said flatout. “People are tired of playing the numbers game.”

Gen Z and Millennials are burnt out the most by dating apps.

According to a 2024 survey by Forbes, dating app fatigue is hitting hard — especially among Millennials and Gen Z, with 80% and 79% respectively reporting feelings of burnout. A full 40% of respondents said they struggled to find genuine connections on these platforms. Many also reported toxic or unsettling experiences: 41% admitted to ghosting someone, 38% said they had been catfished, and 27% experienced “love bombing” — being overwhelmed with affection early on. Shockingly, on average, users reported spending nearly 51 minutes a day on dating apps.

Now, many are shifting their effort to the matchmaking world for help. Matchmaker Alexis Germany Fox told PopSugar on June 12 that she’s seen a 35% increase in Gen Z clients since 2021, a shift she attributes to the pandemic’s lasting impact on how young people approach dating. Similarly, matchmaking company Three Day Rule reported nearly 50 clients aged 27 or younger in the past year — a dramatic rise compared to their usual annual average of fewer than 10 in that age group.

The trend isn’t limited to Gen Z. Viola Steed, founder of Solutions Matchmaking in Perth, told Vice on June 23 that she’s seeing growing demand among professionals in their 30s and 40s. Many are well-educated, career-driven, and increasingly disillusioned with dating apps that prioritize quantity over quality. They’re no longer just looking for chemistry — they’re seeking true compatibility.

But here’s the catch: access to personalized matchmaking services often comes with a hefty price tag. According to the popular matchmaking platform Tawkify, as of 2024, matchmaking fees typically range from $3,000 to $50,000. Prices can vary depending on:

The exclusivity of the service.

The length of the contract.

The level of personalization provided.

These costs reflect the deeply customized, hands-on approach that sets modern matchmaking apart from the swipe-heavy world of dating apps. But if you can’t afford it, don’t fret. Several popular dating apps — including Tinder, Hinge, and OkCupid — have introduced matchmaking features that offer human-curated match suggestions, typically for an additional fee. For example, Tinder’s “Matchmaker” feature allows friends and family to asynchronously browse and recommend potential matches on a user’s behalf, bringing you one step closer to finding the one.

So that WAS Klay photobombing Meg’s bikini pics! Megan Thee Stallion and Klay Thompson are definitely dating, and the Mavericks star hard-launched with a coupled-up carousel of photos.

Earlier this week, eagle-eyed internet investigators spotted a familiar face in the background of Megan’s latest summer vacation post on Instagram. During her photoshoot, the mystery man settled into a lounge chair for a closer look at her sizzling snaps.

And who could blame him? It’s hard to focus on anything else besides the super snatched perfection of Thee Stallion, but countless comments caught Klay Thompson in the cut and set social media ablaze.

Welp, once fans already put the baller on blast, Klay decided to really give us something to talk about. On Saturday, Klay took to Instagram with a photo dump of his vacation, which turns out to be a tropical baecation in the Bahamas with the Hot Girl Swim stunner herself.

In one photo, Klay is kissing a woman with flowing curls so big that they almost blocked his 6’5″ face. Although the woman’s back is to the camera, we’d know that colossal cake-clapper from a mile away, especially in those curve-hugging cream pants.

Another photo features a close-up of Klay holding Megan’s meticulously manicured hand as he leads her down a path to what looks like a sandy beach. We don’t get any additional glimpses of what looks like a very romantic date night, but fans have seen enough to stan the new celebrity couple.

Several comments joked that although the 35-year-old star is a four-time champ, they weren’t familiar with his game until now. The second-generation NBA star’s past romantic roster is as stacked as his stats. Klay keeps a ring and a baddie on his hands! He previously dated actresses Laura Harrier and Eiza González, and multi-hyphenate hottie Coco Jones.

Megan Thee Stallion most recently popped out with Bulls player Torrey Craig in 2024. It seems like the Grammy winner quietly kept it pushing after his ex threw some shade, and a model accused him of dirty dog DM diving during the relationship. Now, the hotties are celebrating that their fave moved on to bigger things with the future Hall of Famer.

Basketball fans claimed this further confirms that Klay is all the way back in his bag.

He already got a makeover, ditching his fluffy fro for a throwback to his low cut. Between the sea-sickening waves and the ultimate wobbledy-wobbling wonder on Klay’s arm, he’s seemingly in his prime to collect another championship ring like an infinity stone.

If anyone can bring even more heat to the upcoming NBA season, it’s the Hot Girl Coach herself, and we truly love to see it!

Daters beware! “Cookie jarring” is on the rise, and while it may sound sweet, it’s anything but. This toxic dating trend, which originally surfaced in 2019, according to the Daily Mail, has made a comeback, and it occurs when someone dates multiple people at the same time to find the right match. However, in their pursuit of love, they may have no genuine intention of building a long-term relationship with some of the people they date.

RELATED CONTENT Ghosting’s Messier Cousin: Are You Dating A Submariner?

Relationship expert Arrezzo Azim says that this strategy can be particularly dangerous for the person who is being cookie jarred because oftentimes they are being strung along, kept on the back burner until their indecisive date finally decides whether they want to progress the relationship. This could lead to heartbreak for some.

“Let’s be honest, you’re keeping them on the side because you want to have somebody else as [a] back-up in case this doesn’t work out,” Azim, a Positive Psychology Coach, told the Daily Mail on July 4. “The attention’s amazing — but the long-term effects are a lot worse if you do it that way.”

Finding love and building a committed relationship with someone can feel scary, and if that feeling isn’t mutual, it can lead to heartbreaking rejection. People who cookie jar typically have their defense guard up when dating, so to prevent the “sting” of rejection from surfacing, they may string someone along to have them as a “back up plan” even though there may not be a romantic spark, explained Azim in a TikTok video posted in 2021. Bottom line: they are insecure.

But this toxic dating habit benefits no one, says Theresa Herring, a licensed marriage and family therapist. Herring, founder of Centered Connections in Illinois, explained that this approach often leaves the person on the receiving end feeling confused and emotionally dependent if a romantic connection develops.

“And it prevents the person you’ve cookie jarred from meeting someone who actually likes them enough to date them,” Herring told NBC News in 2019.

Additionally, it can backfire if the person that the cookie jarrer is genuinely interested in finds out.

How do you protect yourself?

So, how do you protect yourself from cooking jarring? According to psychologist and author Tina B. Tessina, there are a few tell-tale signs of cooking jarring that you should be on high alert for when dating.

“If your date never wants to make a definite plan (would you like to go out Friday night?) and just wants to come over to your house on the spur of the moment, he/she doesn’t make an effort to keep in touch (you should not be making all the effort) and doesn’t seem to think about the future, they’re probably just using you as ‘reserve,” she revealed to NBC News.

If you notice those signs, it’s time to have an honest conversation. Before doing so, make sure you’re clear about what you want from the relationship. That way, you can decide whether to move forward based on how the other person responds.

If you’re reading this and identify as a cookie jarrer, dating trend expert Eugénie Legendre says you should give yourself time to date someone “without the influence of anyone else,” to see if there is truly a connection worth building before you move on to the next person. Give it some time to see if something truly special develops.

A new toxic dating trend is making the rounds, and while it might seem harmless at first, it could be sabotaging your chances of building a genuine connection with someone over time. It’s called “floodlighting,” the tendency to overshare deeply personal information too early in the dating process.

Although opening up may feel like a way to build intimacy, doing so before trust is established can be overwhelming or off-putting to the other person. Remember, you’re still getting to know each other, and real trust takes time to develop.

“This sharing can feel like a shortcut to closeness, but it often overwhelms the listener, making the connection feel intense but unsteady,” explained Dr. Sarah Hodges, a Therapy Network Manager at the mental health-centered company Headspace, during an interview with Today published April 16. “Unlike intentional vulnerability, which unfolds over time and is reciprocal, floodlighting tends to be one-sided and can sometimes push the other person away.”

RELATED CONTENT: What Is Freak Matching? This Bold New Dating Trend Has Everyone Talking

It’s natural to want to share personal stories about your family or an anecdote about that time your high school bully embarrassed you, but deeply personal experiences about your life are best revealed gradually, as you build a genuine connection with your date. These conversations should unfold naturally over time, explained Dr. Hodges. Opening up too quickly, especially on a first or second date, can come across as overwhelming or even desperate, and may place unnecessary pressure on the other person before trust has had a chance to develop.

“Instead of letting trust develop naturally, it’s like skipping ahead to the most intense part of a relationship before the foundation is there,” the therapist added.

Why do people commit floodlighting?
Source: Deagreez

Why do people floodlight, you ask? According to Dr. Hodges, this bad habit often stems from an anxious attachment style, the deep need to be accepted fully—flaws and all—right from the start. Many people don’t even realize they’re doing it most of the time. But it’s typically a subconscious tick that occurs when someone is trying to “test” the “emotional availability” of their potential partner, hoping that they respond well to their vulnerabilities.

“This concept resonates because so many people—especially those with unresolved trauma—are desperate for deep connection, but aren’t sure how to build it safely,” she noted.

Jessica Alderson, co-founder of the dating app, So Synced, put it this way: Floodlighting can often stem from a need for reassurance rather than intentional manipulation. However, in an interview with Glamour on Feb. 25, she pointed out that some people may consciously or unconsciously use this behavior to fast-track emotional intimacy, which can put pressure on the other person and lead to premature emotional entanglement.

At the same time, the person floodlighting may also be putting themselves at risk of emotional exploitation. This behavior can create imbalanced dynamics in a relationship. When one person shares deeply and frequently, while the other is left in the role of emotional supporter or caretaker, it can lead to a dynamic where one partner appears overly dependent or fragile. Healthy relationships thrive on a mutual and balanced exchange of vulnerability, built gradually over time.

Bottom line, being open is key to connection, but in the early stages of dating, pace matters. Let trust grow gradually because intimacy built slowly is intimacy built to last.

Are you guilty of committing this toxic dating trend?

Despite their recent outing, where they were spotted hand-in-hand, Janet Jackson and Maxwell are reportedly not dating.

The musicians were the talk of social media when they were seen holding hands and looking every bit of a couple! But, according to reports from TMZ, sources with direct knowledge insist Jackson and Maxwell have nothing going on romantically.

The pair have been good friends for years and years, and, according to insiders, that is still where their relationship stands today.

Speculation about Janet and Maxwell possibly being a couple started to skyrocket after they arrived hand-in-hand at the 1,500th performance of Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club on Monday evening in London. The “That’s the Way Love Goes” singer was flashing a big smile as she led Maxwell into the performance, and the friends looked closer than normal during this particular outing.

Jackson has been divorced since 2017, and in the years since, she’s kept her love life on the down low. Maxwell isn’t publicly dating anyone, either, but unfortunately for hopeful fans, that doesn’t mean anything is going on between these two.

These rumors come nearly a decade after Jackson divorced her ex-husband Wissam Al Mana after five years of marriage. Together, the two share son, Eissa, 8.

“[Being a mother is] the most beautiful thing. I’m so thankful God allowed me to have this experience, this journey in my life,” she told the BBC in July 2024. “And I love every single minute of it.”

In the same interview, Janet joked about her love life, asking, “How many times have I been married now? Three I think.” Prior to Al Mana, she was previously married to René Elizondo Jr. and James DeBarge.

In another interview with The Guardian a few months later, Jackson revealed she was single, but said she feels like she has broken free of control in her relationships.

“I’m single, so I pray to God that I might have different lenses on these eyes than I did before,” she said. “I know that if someone were to come along…even if I didn’t recognize it, I guarantee you my friends would shake the shit out of me and say, ‘What are you doing?!’ But I think I’m seeing it through different lenses now. I think I am breaking that pattern.”
