Why Was ‘Grand Theft Auto 6’ Delayed Again, With A Politician Calling It A ‘Huge Scandal’? – Blavity
Fans will have to wait a little bit longer for Grand Theft Auto 6, aka Grand Theft Auto 6 VI.
According to the BBC, video game publisher Rockstar Games announced another delay on the game on Thursday. It’s the second push back on the game, which fans were expecting in May 2026.
‘Grand Theft Auto VI’ is now expected on Nov. 19, 2026
Rockstar Games first announced the newest installment of the Grand Theft Auto series in February 2022. A year and a half later, an initial trailer for the game teased a 2025 release date as well as its two protagonists, Jason and Lucia, and it’s set in Leonida, a fictional U.S. state based on Florida.
As we previously reported in May, the game was pushed to May 26, 2026, to give Rockstar Games “extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”
Fans were excited about the delay after realizing the new release date fell on Bonnie and Clyde’s funeral. The infamous couple is believed to be the inspiration for Jason and Lucia.
Now, Rockstar Games has given Grand Theft Auto VI a new release date of Nov. 19, 2026.
Strauss Zelnick, chairman and CEO of Rockstar Games’ parent company, Take-Two Interactive, told IGN that he is “highly confident” this will be the last time the game is delayed.
“I’m highly confident,” he told the outlet. “And at the same time, there have been limited circumstances where more time was required to polish a title and make sure that it was spectacular and that time has been well-spent, when our competitors go to market before something was ready, bad things happen. That said, that said, I’m highly confident on the new date.”
Polish member of parliament calls the delay a ‘huge scandal’
According to Euronews, Poland’s parliament has weighed in on the recent delay of the game. Witold Tumanowicz, a member of the KWiN opposition party (Confederation Liberty and Independence), addressed the push during a recent session of parliament, referring to it as a “disturbing matter.”
“This is a huge scandal”, Tumanowicz said.
Tumanowicz also joked about the delay in a speech at the Polish lower house on Friday.
“Honestly, if people don’t take to the streets after something like this, I don’t know what will happen,” he said in what the Polish media described as an “absurb scene” while social media praised the joke.
Paweł Szrot, another Polish parliament member, echoed his colleague’s sentiment on X, formerly Twitter.
“I respect such statements, Representative. I hope the add-on for Bannerlord (another role-playing video game) doesn’t get delayed any further,” he wrote.
Takie oświadczenia to ja szanuję, Pośle. Oby dodatek do Bannerlorda się bardziej nie opóźnił..— Paweł Szrot (@PSzrot) November 7, 2025
Hype surrounding ‘Grand Theft Auto VI’ and ‘Grand Theft Auto Online’ may be behind the delays
According to the BBC, there are likely a couple of reasons why Rockstar Games keeps pushing Grand Theft Auto VI‘s release. First, the new game has a lot of hype surrounding its release, with most of the game’s trailers garnering millions of views on YouTube. The pressure to give fans a wow-worthy game, something Zelnick says is a must for all new releases, especially Grand Theft Auto VI, is high.
Zelnick explained that those working on the game are “seeking perfection.”
Second, Grand Theft Auto Online is a highly successful arm of Rockstar Games. Its numbers are akin to those pulled in by some of the world’s most-played games every month, and it rakes in a massive amount of money for Rockstar Games. The company has made $8.9 billion since the release of Grand Theft Auto V.
However, this week, Take-Two shared that the company has seen an anticipated decline in its GTA Online numbers.
Gaming experts told BBC Newsbeat in December that the latest installment of Grand Theft Auto will be a success only if it’s able to bring current players over to its online mode.
