The White House has began to demolish its East Wing to make room for Donald Trump‘s ballroom. Per CNN, an excavator was seen at the White House on Monday as parts of the East Wing came down. Images also showed that parts of the roof at the East Wing were torn down.

Trump’s administration announced earlier this year that the president plans to build a new ballroom that would occupy parts of the East Wing.

What did Donald Trump say about the ballroom he plans to build?

“I am pleased to announce that ground has been broken on the White House grounds to build the new, big, beautiful White House Ballroom,” Trump posted on social media on Monday, per CNN. “Completely separate from the White House itself, the East Wing is being fully modernized as part of this process, and will be more beautiful than ever when it is complete!”

Trump also spoke about the construction when he hosted the LSU baseball team in the White House on Monday.

“You know, we’re building right behind us — we’re building a ballroom. They wanted a ballroom for 150 years, and I’m giving that honor to this wonderful place,” he said. “I didn’t know I’d be standing here right now, because right on the other side, you have a lot of construction going on, which you might hear periodically.”

What are the features of Donald Trump’s new ballroom?

Trump’s new 90,000-square-foot ballroom is expected to feature a large space with gold and crystal chandeliers, as well as gilded Corinthian columns, gold floor lamps and a checkered marble floor. The room will have a capacity of 650 people.

“There won’t be anything like it actually. You know, a new thing is you build a super modern building next to an old-fashioned building, and I think that’s good, but I don’t have the courage to do that with the White House,” Trump said at a recent dinner with donors, per CNN.

The Trump administration said the project is funded by the president and other private donors.
