If you’re a regular social media user, you may have come across TikTok’s latest viral trend. On the platform, users are boasting their allegiance to “Group 7” after they’ve gotten a spot. Here’s what to know about the exclusive group and what social media users are referring to.
Group 7 on TikTok, explained
Group 7 is more of a TikTok trend than a secret club. It became viral after singer Sophia James used the platform’s algorithm to her advantage in order to promote her latest single titled “So Unfair.” The artist posted several videos in order for her song to gain traction, including labeling each video in order to see who saw it first.
In her fourth TikTok, James labeled it “group 4”: “If you’re seeing this you are in group 4,” she wrote. “I am posting a bunch of videos and seeing which ones reach the most viewers. This is the fourth post of the batch so you are group 4.”
James posted additional videos and eventually arrived at the seventh and final video.
“If you are watching this video, you are in group 7,” she said in the TikTok clip that went viral. “I have posted seven videos tonight and this is the seventh one. Just a little science experiment to see what kind of video gets the most reach.”
“I don’t know what that says about you, but you’re in group 7!” she added.

As of Oct. 21, the video was viewed over 17 million times. Public figures added to the comment section and reacted to their inclusion in group 7 such as Naomi Osaka, the official account for the Kansas City Chiefs and Barbara Corcoran, according to Today.
Users commented jokingly about their inclusion in the group.
“i (hereby) declare group 7 is the most elite group,” someone wrote.
“Group 7 is the hot girl group I don’t make the rules,” another person added.
“I have immediate beef with groups 1-6,” a user commented.
Group 7 is a marketing tactic that resonates beyond social media
James isn’t the first person to separate content into different groups targeting different users and their individual For You Page. This type of content is often formulated as reading “the first video you see,” describing the user’s aesthetic, favorite fandom character, past and future life, etc.
TikTok users have also been using the search bar to see what the algorithm picks for them by typing a simple word. It can be anything from a color, song, book quote or dream job.
Some users praised James for her use of social media as a way to market her new song.
“Everyone is using her song, and it is the best marketing technique I have ever seen a musician do,” TikTok user @rebeccapousma said in a video. “I think we all should really know the name Sophia James.”
Seeing the virality of her video, James decided to organize a real life meet-up with members of group 7. She will be meeting members of the group at The Bedford Pub in London on Oct. 24 at 8 p.m., according to The Independent.
