What Did Trump Say About Rob Reiner? Vile Remarks About Murder Of Director And His Wife Receive Backlash – Blavity
President Donald Trump, no stranger to making vile comments about his political foes, has crossed a line even for many of his supporters. The president’s unhinged remarks about the murders of Rob and Michele Reiner have led to widespread condemnation from across parties, even as Trump doubles down and some of his allies stand by him.
Trump condemned for attacking Reiner and blaming the director for his murder
Reacting to the murder of the famed director and actor and his wife, Trump unleashed a rant against the liberal Hollywood legend over Reiner’s vocal opposition to Trump. Describing Reiner as “a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star,” Trump blamed the couple’s murder on “the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.” Trump further claimed that Reiner “was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump.”

The Reiners’ son, Nick, has been arrested and is expected to be charged with the murder of his parents; Nick has a long, documented history of drug addiction. There has been no indication that opinions concerning Trump or politics played any role in the murder. Trump’s comments, focusing on himself rather than the murdered couple and attempting to blame the Reiners for their murders based on their politics, have been widely condemned.“This is one of the most psychotic things Trump has ever posted,” journalist Aaron Rupar wrote.

Journalist Mehdi Hasan rejected “both sides”-style arguments that compared Trump’s comments to liberal reactions to the murder of Charlie Kirk.“Compare and contrast Donald Trump’s response to Rob Reiner’s murder with Biden and Harris’s responses to Charlie Kirk’s murder,” Hasan wrote, along with screenshots of posts made by former President Joe Biden, former Vice President Kamala Harris and Trump. “There is no ‘both sides’. Just one side – Trump – that is cruel, sociopathic, unhinged.”

Conservative commentator Bill Kristol, a long-term critic of Trump, posted a comparison of the lives of Reiner, whose “memory will be a blessing,” and Trump, who “will be remembered as an embarrassment to our nation.”

Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live, former first lady Michelle Obama noted that she and former President Barack Obama had plans to see the Reiners on the night the couple was discovered murdered. She then referenced Trump’s remarks, though without saying his name.
“Let me just say this, unlike some people: Rob and Michele Reiner are some of the most decent, courageous people you ever want to know. They are not deranged or crazed. What they have always been are passionate people,” she said, adding, “They cared about their family, and they cared about this country, and they cared about fairness and equity.”

Trump supporters are divided in reaction to the president’s remarks
Even Trump supporters are distancing themselves from the president’s remarks. Conservative commentator Sage Steele wrote, “This tweet is so disappointing. And so unnecessary. It’s comments like this that take away from the countless great things @realDonaldTrump does for America.”

Several figures on Fox News also rejected Trump’s comments. Howard Kurz said that Trump’s remarks were “beneath the office” of the president and said that “it would have been better if the president had made no comment.” Kurz and Fox host Bret Baier also contrasted Trump’s remarks with Reiner’s comments, expressing “horror” at the murder of Charlie Kirk. “That should never happen to anybody. I don’t care what your political beliefs are; that’s not acceptable,” Reiner said of Kirk’s murder.

Some of Trump’s closest allies, however, have refused to condemn him. Asked about Republican backlash to Trump’s remarks, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson told reporters, “I don’t do ongoing commentary about everything that’s said by everybody in government every day,” the Louisiana Republican told reporters before trying to change the subject to the ongoing healthcare debate.

Republican Sen. Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma attempted to defend the Truth Social comments Trump made about Reiner, saying, “I don’t think they’re controversial. Because he was respectful to him, he said he was once a really good actor and all that.”

Trump, meanwhile, has doubled down on his remarks. When asked about widespread Republican condemnation of his Truth Social remarks, Trump reiterated his comments, calling Reiner “a deranged person as far as Trump is concerned” and saying, “I was not a fan of Rob Reiner at all in any way, shape or form. I thought he was very bad for our country.”
Q: Republicans have denounced your statement on Rob Reiner. Do you stand by it?Trump: “I wasn’t a fan of his. He was a deranged person.”The man was murdered in his own home and this is the president’s response. No empathy. No restraint. Just cruelty, even in death. pic.twitter.com/EnKyGEdFEZ— Brian Allen (@allenanalysis) December 15, 2025
Trump’s choice to stick by his attacks against Rob Reiner seems to indicate that the president is either unaware of the level of backlash against his comments or that he doesn’t care. He has spent much of his current term attempting to settle scores with his political foes and critics, but attacking a beloved entertainer immediately after his tragic death represents a low point for Trump, even in the eyes of the president’s allies.
