‘Tyler Perry’s Beauty In Black’ Star Taylor Polidore Williams On Kimmie Giving Mallory A Run For Her Money – Blavity
Kimmie on Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black is finally ready to claim her throne as the new HBIC (that is, head Bellarie in charge), but several family members believe she’s standing in the way.
In the first part of Season 2 of the Netflix series, fans are getting a few answers to the questions they were left with at the end of Season 1, while a new set awaits them by the end of this installment.
What is Kimmie’s mission?
“To lead,” Taylor Polidore Williams told Blavity’s Shadow and Act of her character’s mission. “Even if I don’t know what I’m doing, I’m making it look like I know what I’m doing. Fake it ’til you make it.”
She continued, “It’s definitely a shift from Season 1 to where we ended. I think just to make the switch, the script and the story really help with that, because the dialogue, in and of itself, is empowered. She went from not being able to look people in the eye to now slapping Jules in the face and saying all kinds of crazy stuff. So it literally is easier because of the material. As a person, I actually am not as meek and mild as Kimmie. I’m not a tyrant in any way, like how she was in the office, but playing somebody that is more empowered is more aligned with my real personality, so that wasn’t difficult to tap into.”
How does her character reflect on others?
In a previous interview, Richard Lawson described his Beauty in Black co-star’s character as “a wrench in the machinery,” noting that Kimmie is a threat to the Bellarie family because she’s not blood or a significant part of their unit, meaning that there is so much they don’t know about her.
On the contrary, Crystle Stewart’s Mallory is a Bellarie by marriage, and she finally has someone who can give her a run for her money through Kimmie.
“Kimmie and Mallory absolutely are mirrors,” Williams said. “But I think like anybody who is too similar to you, and then, just the dynamic that they’re in, I only see it going two ways: Either they’re going to form an alliance, or they’re going to go at it. Because if you have a conflict with somebody similar to you, you know what they’re going to do. You know how they’re going to move, and I think that’s what they’re discovering. Like, ‘Not you’re my twin,’ so I don’t know which way it’s going to go yet.”
Kimmie lives up to Williams’ alma mater’s motto to a T
As a graduate of Clark Atlanta University, Williams embodies the school’s motto, “I’ll find a way or make one,” just as Kimmie does.
“I think her whole life — you know, find a way or make one — is the CAU motto,” the actor reflected. “And I think that when you’re a person who’s just trying to survive in the conditions that Kimmie was in every day, she’s finding a way. Whether it’s paying [for] the motel that she and Rain were in or trying to make sure Rain stayed alive and all these things, it’s time after time she’s finding a way.”
Williams added, “But I think she’s going to transition there. What I would hope is that she transitions to thriving, but that same skill of finding a way, she’s going to need in the new position, in the new rooms, around the family, in the boardroom; she’s still proving herself.”
Part 1 of Season 2 of Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black is now streaming on Netflix.
