The fallout continues to grow in the aftermath of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fatally shooting a motorist in Minnesota in an incident caught on video. As scrutiny and debate continue over the lethal use of force against an American citizen, President Donald Trump has doubled down on his administration’s attempts to paint the woman killed as an aggressor in the confrontation.

Trump pushes false narrative that Good ‘ran over’ ICE agent who shot her

Trump weighed in on Wednesday concerning the killing of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good during an encounter with ICE agents in Minneapolis earlier that day. Posting on social media, Trump said that he had viewed a video of the incident and claimed that the woman, later identified as Good, was “a professional agitator.”

Trump claimed Good “violently, willfully, and viciously ran over the ICE Officer, who seems to have shot her in self-defense.” Trump also commented on the condition of the agent who shot Good, saying, “Based on the attached clip, it is hard to believe he is alive, but is now recovering in the hospital.”

Trump’s account is directly contradicted by videos of the incident and its aftermath, which show the agent being bumped by Good’s vehicle but remaining on his feet as he steps to the side while firing several shots at Good as she turns the car away. Other clips posted on social media by various people purported to show the agent shortly after the shooting, noting that he “not only looks uninjured physically, he seems mentally fine, not shaken up, unbothered, walking away from the scene.”

As Blavity reported, Good was shot and killed on Wednesday by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent as she attempted to drive away during an encounter with ICE agents. The Trump administration has defended the shooting, with Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem calling Good’s action “act of domestic terrorism” against the ICE agents on the scene, claiming that the deceased woman “attempted to run them over and rammed them with her vehicle.” 

Democratic officials push back against White House’s narrative and call for an investigation

Several current and former elected officials have condemned the shooting, with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey bluntly telling ICE to “get the f**k out of Minneapolis.” Frey accused ICE of “sowing chaos on our streets and in this case quite literally killing people.” Frey also said that the claim that the ICE agent fired in self-defense “is bulls**t.”

Meanwhile, others are calling for a thorough and effective investigation of the shooting. Former Vice President Kamala Harris called the shooting “a shocking incident.” She said on social media, “Governor Walz has announced the state will ensure a fair investigation, and I am grateful for his swift action.” Harris also noted the video evidence of the shooting and called the Trump administration’s explanation “pure gaslighting.”

Walz, during a Thursday press conference, reiterated the need for an inquiry into the shooting, noting, “The Trump Administration has now denied the state that ability to participate in the investigation.” Walz insisted that “Minnesota must be part of this investigation.”

The Trump administration has painted a picture of the fatal shooting of Good that contradicts video evidence of what happened. Nevertheless, the administration’s attempts to shape a narrative and to block local officials from the investigation of the incident create a situation in which it may be challenging to hold anyone accountable for the lethal encounter.
