Trump Booed At Commanders Game, Reportedly Wants Stadium Named After Him – Blavity

President Donald Trump may be angling for a new football stadium in the nation’s capital to be named after him. The White House is playing into reports that Trump is seeking to have his name attached to the new home of Washington, D.C.’s NFL franchise. But the president’s visit to the team’s latest game did not go the way the president likely planned.

White House plays into speculation, tries to take credit for stadium

Talks have been going on between the White House and the owners of the Washington Commanders over naming the NFL team’s new stadium after Trump, an unnamed senior White House source told ESPN. Though these discussions have not been formal negotiations, they have involved the Commanders’ ownership group, led by Josh Harris, according to ESPN’s source. The new, as yet unnamed $3.7 billion stadium is being built on the site of the previous RFK stadium, where the Washington team played from 1961 to 1996. The decision on naming the stadium will likely have to include the team’s owners as well as the District of Columbia Council, as the city is leasing the stadium to the team, and the National Park Services, which controls the land on which the stadium is being constructed.

Neither the city of Washington, D.C., nor the Commanders has explicitly acknowledged talks about naming the stadium after Trump. The Commanders declined to comment on the reports, as did Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser, who has had an uneasy relationship with the administration, especially since a federal takeover of the city’s policing. However, the Trump administration has not dismissed the idea. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt responded to the idea of the stadium being named after Trump by telling ESPN, “That would surely be a beautiful name, as it was President Trump who made the rebuilding of the new stadium possible.” It was Congress and President Joe Biden who, in 2024, authorized the use of federal land for the stadium, with Congress in January granting Washington, D.C., control of the land for 99 years. The city agreed to contribute about $1.1 billion of the $3.7 billion cost of the stadium complex. Trump, for his part, threatened to block the stadium deal unless the team restored its old name, the Washington Redskins, which was dropped in 2020 after being condemned for years as a racial slur against Native Americans.

Trump’s NFL guest appearance marked by misrepresentations, jeers

On Sunday, Trump visited the team’s current home, Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland, during the Commanders’ home game against the Detroit Lions, and he made an appearance during Fox’s Sunday broadcast of the game. Trump sat in the booth with Fox commentators, with the president giving his own take on the game as well as using the opportunity to hit some of his usual political talking points, such as attempting to paint a rosy picture of the economy, despite the data indicating otherwise, and attacking the Biden administration.

Fox just turned an NFL game into a Trump rally. He lied about “prices coming down” and bragged about “$17 trillion in investment,” while Americans miss paychecks in his shutdown. This isn’t broadcasting. While the Fox hosts were welcoming to Trump, the crowd was less receptive to the president’s presence. As Trump, standing next to Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, read the Oath of Enlistment to service members during a halftime ceremony at the game, the president was loudly booed by the crowd.

The press office of California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has trolled Trump on social media for months, reposted the video of the president being booed with a laughing caption.

It is unclear whether the cold reception Trump experienced from Commanders fans will change his mind about wanting to place his name on the team’s new facility. For now, the prospects of a Trump-branded stadium in Washington, D.C., remain the subject of speculation. But if Trump does end up with his name attached to the Commanders’ stadium, Sunday’s appearance indicates that he may not like the reception he receives when he visits.
