Is the listeria outbreak dangerous?

In June, meal manufacturer FreshRealm recalled its chicken fettuccine Alfredo meals distributed to Kroger and Walmart under the brand names Marketside and Home Chef. That month, 17 cases of listeria in connection with the outbreak were reported in 17 states. At the time, 16 people were hospitalized and three people died, according to The New York Times.

The listeria outbreak caused an additional three cases, including one death. Cases have been located in California, Utah, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Nevada, Ohio, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia.

The consumption of food contaminated with listeria may cause listeriosis, an infection that primarily affects older adults, those with a weakened immune system, as well as pregnant women and their newborns.

“Listeriosis can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. An invasive infection spreads beyond the gastrointestinal tract,” according to the FSIS. “In pregnant women, the infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery or life-threatening infection of the newborn. In addition, serious and sometimes fatal infections can occur in older adults and persons with weakened immune systems.”

Listeriosis is treatable via antibiotics. The department indicated that those in higher risk categories who experience flu-like symptoms two months after eating contaminated food should seek medical care.

Consumers may contact Nate’s Fine Foods at 916-677-7303, with any questions regarding the  public health alert. They can be reached between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. PST Monday through Friday. Consumers may also contact USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline toll free at 888-674-6854 or MPHotline@usda.gov.

The FSIS also invited consumers to report issues with meat, poultry or egg products via the online Electronic Consumer Complaint Monitoring System accessible 24 hours a day: https://foodcomplaint.fsis.usda.gov/eCCF/.
