Taye Diggs Spy Drama Among 2 Pilots Malcolm D. Lee Is Developing At NBC And Peacock – Blavity
Malcolm D. Lee is developing two different pilots for NBC and Peacock, and one includes him re-teaming with his The Best Man franchise star, Taye Diggs.
Variety reports that Lee is directing and executive producing both Need to Know for NBC and Becoming Marlow Fin for Peacock. The two pilots are part of Lee’s first-look deal with NBCUniversal and his production company, Blackmaled Productions.
Need to Know will star Diggs, who will also executive produce.
What to know about the ‘Need to Know’ pilot
According to the logline, the series is inspired by true events and is “a spy procedural about a battle-scarred CIA veteran who must team up with a cocky young officer as they run the CIA’s most daring operations from a secret base in South Florida.”
Also executive producing is Alexander Maggio, who also serves as the writer of the pilot. Terence Paul Winter will also executive produce and write if the pilot is greenlit for a full series. Other executive producers include Spycraft Entertainment’s John Sipher, Dominique Telson and Jerry O’Shea. Blackmaled’s VP of television, Michael Scott Allen, and Rachel Harner serve as co-executive producers.
What to know about the ‘Becoming Marlow Fin’ pilot
The second pilot, Becoming Marlow Fin, is based on the novel by Ellen Won Steil and follows the main character, who is an international superstar with a tragic past. According to the logline, “Over the course of an explosive prime interview, global superstar Marlow Fin’s mysterious life is revealed as she recounts the events leading up to the disappearance of her sister and publicly makes the case for her innocence as the prime suspect in her presumed murder.”
No star has been attached yet, but Des Moran, who is one of the creatives behind Netflix’s upcoming A Different World sequel, will write and serve as executive producer. Allen will also executive produce this project along with Blackmaled’s EVP of film and television, Dominique Telson.
Lee has several other projects in the works, including a Girls Trip sequel, Girls Trip 2.
Lee has also brought his Best Man universe to life once again, but this time in a book series, starting with The Best Man: Unfinished Business. As he told Blavity in June, “I’ve been fantasizing about writing a novel, and I thought, okay, here was an opportunity with characters that I already knew, with a story that had already been previously discussed and displayed, to be more expansive in the storytelling. And the fans said that they wanted some more from these characters.”
