The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits, given to families with limited income or people with disabilities, will start going out on the first of the month as expected, according to The Hill. However, there’s another check that will be distributed on Dec. 31. That payment, which is actually for January, is paid early because of New Year’s Day. Beneficiaries will then get February’s payment on Jan. 30 because Feb. 1 falls on a Sunday.

What is the normal schedule for social security payments?

The Social Security Administration normally schedules payments according to birthdates. People born between the 1st and 10th get their payment on the second Wednesday of the month. Recipients born between the 11th and the 20th get their benefits on the third Wednesday. Those born between the 21st and the 31st get their benefits on the final Wednesday of the month.

The Hill reported that about 71 million recipients will see an increase of 2.8% in January due to the cost-of-living adjustment. That equals to an increase of about $56 per month. The Social Security Administration announced that the COLA will take effect in January. Per the announcement, the COLA, which was 2.5 percent in 2025, has averaged about 3.1 percent in the last decade.

“Social Security is a promise kept, and the annual cost-of-living adjustment is one way we are working to make sure benefits reflect today’s economic realities and continue to provide a foundation of security,” Social Security Administration Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano said in a statement. “The cost-of-living adjustment is a vital part of how Social Security delivers on its mission.”
