The beef hasn’t simmered between Russell Wilson and Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton, which led the former to respond to a recent comment made by Payton.

According to ESPN, Payton name-dropped Wilson in a statement following the recent matchup between his team and the New York Giants on October 19. He mentioned that he was disappointed that the Giants chose to start rookie Jaxson Dart as the quarterback because he wanted to play against Wilson instead.

Payton’s statement about Wilson was made during the post-game press conference following Sunday’s game, in which the Broncos defeated the Giants 33-32 in a remarkable comeback. 

“I have a ton of respect for [the Giants] organization,” Payton shared with reporters. “I spent four of my early years there coordinating a Super Bowl, first game in this stadium before 9/11, close with the Mara and Tisch family.”

He went on to credit the Giants’ staff for picking up Dart, although he hoped that the University of Mississippi alum would be on the bench.

“They found a little spark with that quarterback,” he added. “I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said we were hoping that change would’ve happened long after our game.”

Wilson, who doesn’t generally exchange words with others online, fired back on X: “Classless… but not surprised…. Didn’t realize you’re still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the media. #LetsRide,” he tweeted.

The “bounty hunter” mention was a direct reference to the Saints’ bounty scandal, where former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams ran a cash-for-hits system from 2009 to 2011. The fallout sidelined Payton for the entire 2012 season.

The tension between Wilson and Payton stems from Wilson’s time on the Denver Broncos’ roster from 2022 to 2024. The athlete arrived in Denver in 2022 after a decorated run in Seattle, which included two Super Bowl appearances and one Lombardi Trophy. However, the Broncos went 11–19 with him as the starter and missed the playoffs both years.

The belief that Denver threatened to bench Wilson in 2023 if he refused to waive an injury guarantee. The Broncos eventually cut him after the 2023-24 season, which led him to join the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024. He later signed a one-year deal with the Giants.
