Rod Wave Was In Jail, Arrested On Drug And Weapons Charges, Hours After First Grammy Nomination – Blavity
Rapper-singer Rod Wave, born Rodarius Green, was arrested Friday in Atlanta on multiple drug and weapon charges just hours after receiving his first Grammy nomination.
According to Fox 5 Atlanta, the 27-year-old faces several felony charges, including possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies, possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, reckless driving, and possession of a Schedule V controlled substance, police said.
He was taken into custody by officers of the Atlanta Police Department and booked into the Fulton County Jail, according to online jail records.
What do the Schedule II and Schedule V charges mean under Georgia law?
According to Justia, Schedule II controlled substances are drugs that are considered dangerous and have a high potential for abuse, but can still be prescribed by a doctor under strict regulation.
These drugs can include certain opiates like opium, morphine, codeine, hydrocodone, oxycodone; stimulants such as amphetamines, methamphetamine, methylphenidate (Ritalin), lisdexamfetamine (Vyvanse), and nabilone; and depressants, which include amobarbital, secobarbital, pentobarbital, and glutethimide.
Schedule V drugs are the least restricted federally, with low abuse potential and recognized medical uses.
The drugs include those mixed with other medicines, such as codeine, dihydrocodeine, ethylmorphine, diphenoxylate (with atropine), or opium; other medications like cenobamate, ganaxolone, lacosamide, pregabalin, pyrovalerone, ezogabine, brivaracetam, and lasmiditan; and a common decongestant like Pseudoephedrine, which is an over-the-counter medication, per Justia.
Wave’s attorneys speak out following his arrest
The “Sinners” artist received his first Grammy nomination just hours before his arrest, according to TMZ. His attorneys, Drew Findling, Marissa Goldberg and Zack Findling, spoke to the outlet about his arrest.
They said in a statement to the outlet that their client “was unjustly profiled and unlawfully arrested in Atlanta. The arresting officer belongs to the Atlanta Police Department’s controversial Crime Suppression Unit — a group known for its aggressive tactics and emphasis on high arrest numbers rather than genuine public safety.”
They added that the APD arrested him to meet a “quota-driven approach,” and they look forward to representing him and challenging the “clear violations of [his] rights in court.”
Wave’s past legal issues
Blavity reported that Wave was arrested in Atlanta in May based on an April 21 incident, facing 14 charges, including aggravated assault, pointing a gun at someone, simple assault, reckless conduct, property damage, obstructing law enforcement, tampering with evidence, and conspiracy to commit a felony.
He was booked into Fulton County Jail and released the same day on a $50,000 bond.
The alleged incident may have involved a woman, but authorities had not released the victim’s identity or additional details at the time.
