Reese Witherspoon And Karen Pittman Reveal Why Women Friendships Are Central to ‘The Morning Show’ – Blavity

The Morning Show’s latest season poses a very important question about what one will do with power once they get it.

With the tables turned and Alex Levy’s (Jennifer Aniston) all-women executive team running things at the newly formed UBN – a result of the merger she orchestrated after entirely thwarting the deal between her former lover Paul Marks (Jon Hamm) – the seemingly feminist utopia is showing that much like beauty, power lies in the eyes of the beholder.

Mia Jordan is coming for what’s hers.

When new UBN CEO Stella Bak (Greta Lee) plants the seed of Head of News for Mia Jordan, that becomes her north star. Yet, soon enough, she’ll discover that the only person who has her back at the company is… herself.

“I mean, how many times have we as women, not just Black women, but as women, reached out for support, for love and care, and came back with insufficient funds, honey? I mean, many, many times,” Karen Pittman told Blavity’s Shadow and Act in our cast interview ahead of the show’s premiere.

“I think it’s a reflection of her great resilience, the great writing of The Morning Show that allows us to know that there are multitudes that exist in this character,” she continued. “I feel it’s a great privilege. It’s a great honor to represent women of color in [the] television news industry, but I also think what The Morning Show does well is that we tell an authentic, truthful, and real story about what that journey looks like. It’s entertaining, but hopefully it gets people talking, right? Having the conversation about what that looks like.”

The power of owning your truth.

There’s a turning point in season four of The Morning Show, where Pittman’s Mia has a pivotal conversation with Nicole Beharie’s Christina Jackson about the freedom that comes with owning one’s mistakes.

“Part of that conversation that she has with Chris, [that] people don’t stop loving you because you do something wrong, especially if you own it. I think this is Mia understanding for herself, being a woman, and I think for many seasons, we have seen Mia not own herself, own her journey, and now she’s taking people to task for it. She takes Stella to task. She takes Alex Levy to task for it, and it is an honest reflection of her own journey that she says, ‘I’m not messing around anymore.’ It’s reflected in her costume change. I mean, she’s walking around in red. With Red Bottom shoes on, you know? We might as well be playing ‘Bodak Yellow,’ and Cardi B with Mia prowling the halls of UBN, or in a posture of ‘It’s time for things to change.’ It’s been a fun journey. I’m so blessed and gifted to be able to walk this journey, especially with the writers, Charlotte, Mimi, and our incredible cast.”

A complicated version of sisterhood.

Despite its often beautiful and transformative nature, sisterhood can be messy and complicated, as evident in the way the women of The Morning Show have handled themselves over the last three, and now fourth, seasons.

“I think that, ultimately, this whole show is about the power of female friendships,” said Reese Witherspoon. “Things come and go in your life, but if you have that one solid friend that you can tell everything to, be vulnerable with, get into nasty fights with, you’re still good at the end of the day. That’s kind of the journey we’re on.”

Jennifer Aniston chimed in on the relationship between her character, Alex Levy, and Witherspoon’s Bradley Jackson, “They need each other. They anchor each other in some way.”

Pittman referenced the September 2025 Glamour cover story featuring Nicole Beharie, Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and newcomer Marion Cotillard, who portrays Celine Dumont, as art imitating life in terms of the sisterhood that comprises The Morning Show.

“I don’t know if you’ve seen that Glamour cover that we have. In the middle of it is just us all leaning into each other, but also, it’s me gripping my friend Nicole Beharie’s hand. It was very important to me,” Pittman reflected. “There’s no room for clap back and negative innuendo gossip between people who are really aiming to go higher, and I think that’s part of what Mia stands for on the show. She’s ruthless in it now, but I think, in many ways, she stands for what she’s always stood for, which is maintaining a moral compass and integrity in all matters.”

The Morning Show drops new epsidoes weekly on Apple TV up until the season finale on Nov. 19.
