Recalled Corn Dogs: 58 Million Pounds Impacted Over Wood Contamination, Consumer Injuries – Blavity

The Hillshire Company has recalled 58 million pounds of corn dog and sausage-on-a-stick products due to wood contamination, which has led to multiple consumer injuries, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced on Saturday.

How did the Hillshire Company discover the wood contamination?

The contamination was discovered after the company began receiving consumer complaints, with at least five people suffering injuries. After investigating, Hillshire determined that wooden sticks entered the production process before the battering of the product, according to a news release.

The federal agency stated that the affected food items were packaged between March 17 and Sept. 26, and were sold nationwide, both online and in retail stores, as well as to school districts and Department of Defense facilities. The recalled items had the numbers “EST-582” or “P-894” printed on the packaging labels.

FSIS confirmed that the products were distributed to schools, but they were the result of commercial sales and weren’t provided by the USDA for the National School Lunch Program.

Will the affected food items lead to other consumer injuries?

Following the reported injuries, FSIS expressed concern that many of the recalled products remain in consumers’ refrigerators and freezers, as well as in schools and institutions.

The agency has urged anyone who purchased the items not to consume them and to dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase.

The FSIS has received no additional reports of injury related to the consumption of these products. Those concerned about an injury should contact a healthcare provider.
