Morris Brown College President Says He Was Removed Without Cause As School Issues Statement – Blavity

The president of Morris Brown College said he was abruptly fired without explanation this week and described the decision in a social media post.

What did Kevin James say about his firing?

On Monday, Dr. Kevin E. James said in a Facebook post that the Morris Brown College Board of Trustees removed him from his position “without providing specific cause or substantive explanation.”

James noted that the timing of his removal was questionable, as the Atlanta-based HBCU was preparing for an accreditation review in a few weeks.

“The timing of this decision is particularly troubling, as the institution is approaching its accreditation reaffirmation review in a few weeks,” James wrote. “Equally concerning is that this action disregards established governance best practices and my existing presidential contract, which extends through 2029. I fully intend to pursue all rights and remedies afforded to me under that agreement.”

Why did Morris Brown College remove James?

A spokesperson for Morris Brown College confirmed in a statement to 11 Alive that James was ousted as president.

In Morris Brown’s statement on James’ removal, it announced that trustee Nzinga Shaw would serve as interim president, according to WSB-TV.

“The Morris Brown College Board of Trustees announced today that MBC Trustee Ms. Nzinga Shaw will assume day-to-day operational duties as Interim President of the College, effective immediately.

“The Board extends its deep gratitude to Dr. Kevin James for his years of service and leadership at Morris Brown College. Dr. James has played a meaningful role in guiding the institution through critical seasons of growth, resilience, and transformation. The Board thanks him for his dedication to the students, faculty, staff and alumni, and the broader Morris Brown College community, and wishes him well in his next chapter,” the statement reads.
