MacKenzie Scott Donates $38M To Alabama State, Marking HBCU’s Largest Donation Ever – Blavity

MacKenzie Scott has donated $38 million to Alabama State University. It is the latest of a series of donations made by Scott to HBCUs, as her net worth is estimated at $33 billion.

MacKenzie Scott’s donation to Alabama State University is the largest in its history

The HBCU announced on Monday that it had received a historic donation from Scott. It is the largest donation ASU has received in its history.

“Today marks a defining moment in the history of Alabama State University,” ASU president Quinton Ross wrote in a statement. “I am filled with immense gratitude and [proud] to announce that Alabama State University has received the largest single donation in its 158-year history.”

“Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott has donated an extraordinary $38 million gift to our great University,” he added. “Ms. Scott’s generosity affirms Alabama State University’s reputation as a catalyst for excellence and innovation in higher education. This is truly a pivotal moment in ASU’s history.”

The HBCU did not specify how it would use the donation, nor if it is unrestricted, as were her previous recent contributions to other HBCUs. The donation is significant because of its size, but also because ASU is the second largest HBCU in Alabama after Alabama A&M University.

ASU is the latest HBCU to receive a sizable donation from Scott. Last week, it was announced that she had donated $63 million to Morgan State University. In September, Scott donated $70 million to the United Negro College Fund in order to help fund the 37 institutions that the organization serves.

This fall, Scott also gave $38 million to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, another HBCU, according to Forbes. She also contributed $10 million to the George M. Pullman Educational Foundation, a nonprofit organization that helps Cook County students access higher education. Scott donated $42 million to the nonprofit 10,000 Degrees for low-income students attending college, as well as $50 million to the Native Forward Scholars Fund, providing college scholarships for Native American students.
