Is ‘Chad Powers’ Based On A True Story? What To Know Glen Powell’s Show – Blavity

Hulu’s sports comedy Chad Powers takes catfishing to a whole new level. It follows Russ Holliday, a former superstar quarterback with a big ego who, after tarnishing his career, tries to pursue a comeback by disguising himself as Chad Powers and then walks onto a struggling football team. The show stars Glen Powell, who co-created the series with Michael Waldron. The series also stars Perry Mattfeld, Quentin Plair, Wynn Everett, Frankie Rodriguez and Steve Zahn.

“I could barely keep my … I broke a lot with him. Oh, yeah, it’s ridiculous,” Zahn told People, at the Chad Powers premiere on Sept. 25. “He’s brilliant in this part and he’s an incredible human being. He was a joy to work with, and I hope we get to go back and shoot his second season.”

The six-episode first season premiered on Sept. 30. Before watching the first two episodes on Hulu, here’s everything to know about the new show, including whether it’s based on a real person.

‘Chad Powers’ follows a former football star eight years after he tanked his career

According to Decider, Chad Powers tells the story of Holliday (Powell), a football star whose career takes a nosedive after a humiliating loss at the Rose Bowl. That, plus all-around bad behavior, leaves Holliday canceled and ostracized from football. Eight years later, Holliday strategizes a comeback and Chad Powers is born.

To sell his new identity, Holliday wears Hollywood-level facial prosthetics and a wig to disguise himself, changing his voice and inventing a new backstory so he can walk onto a college football tryout without the baggage of his past.

Former NFL star Eli Manning originated the Chad Powers role

Chad Powers is not inspired by a real person, however, it is based on a character originated by former professional football player Eli Manning in an episode of the 2022 ESPN docuseries Eli’s Places. The viral episode saw Manning disguise himself as Powers and try out as a walk-on quarterback for Penn State.

Manning and his brother Peyton Manning served as executive producers on Chad Powers.

“We took that concept and that inspiration and have doubled down on the prosthetics, updated it, improved it, new model, new Chad, and we’re making a hell of a show here,” Powell said in a Sept. 25 interview with Good Morning America.

New episodes of Chad Powers drop on Tuesdays on Hulu.
