Fátima Bosch Of Mexico Crowned Miss Universe After Standing Up To Host’s Bullying – Blavity
Fátima Bosch Fernández of Mexico was crowned Miss Universe on Friday after a pageant season that went viral for several controversies and judges stepping down during the competition. The 25-year-old stood up for herself after being Thai official Nawat Itsaragrisil. She received support from her fellow contestants, as well as Mexico’s president.
Thailand’s Praveener Singh came in second after Bosch and Venezuela’s Stephany Adriana Abasali came in third.

Nawat, who is the Thai national director, taunted Bosch for not following the promotional activities guidelines during a livestreamed ceremony on Nov. 4. He called security after she stood up for herself in a clip that went viral.
Bosch decided to walk out and was joined by some of her fellow contestants, notably last year’s winner, Denmark’s Victoria Kjær Theilvig.
“What your director did is not respectful: he called me dumb,” Bosch told reporters at the time, according to NBC News. “If it takes away your dignity, you need to go.”

Nawat later apologized for the incident, saying: “If anyone (was) affected and not comfortable it happened, I am so sorry,” he said. “It’s passed. OK? Are you happy?”
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum praised Bosch for advocating for herself and said she sets an example for how women should use their voice.
“It seems to me that it is an example of how women should raise our voices,” Sheinbaum said. “We women look more beautiful when we raise our voice and participate, because that has to do with the recognition of our rights.”
Two judges resigned from the competition this year
The viral clip wasn’t the only controversy that occurred during this year’s competition.
Lebanese-French composer Omar Harfouch resigned from his role on the eight-member jury panel. He alleged there had been a “secret vote” by people who aren’t part of the jury to select the 130 contestants ahead of time. The organization denied these claims.
Shortly after, another judge quit; French soccer star Claude Makélélé decided to step down due to “unforeseen personal reasons.”
