Egg Recall Upgraded To Highest Alert By FDA Amid Multistate Salmonella Concerns From 2 Brands – Blavity
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a nationwide high alert after an Arkansas-based egg distributor recalled more than 6 million eggs over salmonella concerns, and a second brand was added to the list.
Due to the severity of the issue, the agency has labeled it a Class 1 recall, the highest severity level, warning against consuming a product that could “cause serious adverse health consequences or death,” according to a news release and CNet.
So that consumers, retailers and distributors can be aware of the affected food items, Black Sheep Egg Company recalled 12-count and 18-count cartons of free-range large grade A brown eggs with Best By dates between Aug. 22 and Oct. 31 listed on the side of the carton, or with UPCs 860010568507 and 860010568538.
The FDA recently inspected the company’s processing facility in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, and collected environmental samples for testing. More than 40 environmental samples were positive for salmonella, including seven different strains, per the news release.
Black Sheep Egg Company also distributed eggs to other companies in Arkansas, Missouri, Texas, California and Indiana between July 9 and Sept. 17 that may have repackaged them, according to USA Today. There are growing concerns that the products may have been distributed to other states, furthering the salmonella outbreak.
Second egg brand issues recall
The FDA added Kenz Henz of Santa Fe, Texas, to the list of egg brands linked to salmonella contamination. The company recalled its 12-count packages of Kenz Henz brand Grade AA Large Pasture Raised Eggs on Oct. 16, stating it received them from Black Sheep Egg Company, according to the news release. The affected eggs were sold in retail stores in Houston, Texas. The UPC for these eggs is 86949400030 and the Best By dates are Oct. 11 to Oct. 14 and Oct. 16 to Oct. 17.
Salmonella symptoms and egg recall safety
Salmonella illness typically appears 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food and lasts four to seven days. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. Sensitive groups like children under age 5, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of severe infection, per the news release.
The FDA warns that recalled eggs could still be in homes. Consumers, restaurants and retailers should not eat, sell or serve the affected eggs. Recalled items should be discarded or returned.
All areas where the affected items were, including surfaces and containers, should be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized. Handwashing and careful food handling are recommended to prevent cross-contamination. Those who develop symptoms after consuming eggs should contact a health care provider.
