Amazon has agreed to pay out refunds to eligible Prime users in what the Federal Trade Commission called a “historic” $2.5 billion settlement.
In September, Blavity reported that the FTC filed an antitrust lawsuit in 2023 against Amazon, claiming that the company misled millions of customers into signing up for Prime subscriptions. They also made it difficult to opt out and cancel the service.
At the time, an Amazon spokesperson denied the claims, stating that they have always offered customers various options to cancel the subscription.
“Amazon and our executives have always followed the law and this settlement allows us to move forward and focus on innovating for customers,” the company said in a statement. “We work incredibly hard to make it clear and simple for customers to both sign up or cancel their Prime membership, and to offer substantial value for our many millions of loyal Prime members around the world. We will continue to do so, and look forward to what we’ll deliver for Prime members in the coming years.”
How much will Amazon customers receive in the settlement?
According to USA Today, the amount of money customers will receive is based on the total amount of Amazon Prime membership fees paid during the time they had the subscription. However, the maximum amount they can receive is up to $51 from the $2.5 billion settlement.Here’s everything customers should know about the Amazon Prime settlement.
Do customers have to file a settlement claim to receive a refund?
Eligible Prime users will go through two different processes to receive payouts from the retailer. Some customers who used their Prime benefits three or fewer times during a 12-month period will receive their automatic payments by Dec. 24, USA Today reported.
The company confirmed that eligible customers will receive monetary compensation and not Amazon credits or gift cards. Those payments will be processed by a third-party claims administrator.
Meanwhile, the third-party administrator will send out information to those customers who do not qualify for automatic payments by Jan. 23, 2026. They will have until July 23, 2026, to make a claim.
Who is eligible for an Amazon Prime settlement refund?
Amazon customers who signed up for Prime between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2025, are eligible to receive a refund, according to the court order.
They are only eligible for payment if they have had failed attempts while trying to cancel their Prime subscription, or if they signed up for Prime through what the documents call a “challenged enrollment flow,” per USA Today and the court filing.
The “challenged” flow refers to subscriptions that began through specific Amazon pages, including the Universal Prime Decision Page, Shipping Option Select Page, Prime Video enrollment, or Single Page Checkout, according to the court order.
