D’Angelo And Angie Stone’s Son Asks For Prayers After Losing Both Parents In Same Year – Blavity

In the wake of D’Angelo’s death, his son, Michael “D’Angelo II” Archer Jr., is opening up about his grief and the strength his parents instilled in him.

As we reported on Tuesday afternoon, D’Angelo died at 51 following a private battle with pancreatic cancer. He was the father of one son with soul singer Angie Stone, who also passed away earlier this year. A statement from D’Angelo’s family confirmed he died “peacefully at home, surrounded by love,” adding that the singer had “chosen to navigate his health journey privately, focusing on his healing in solitude and surrounded by loved ones.”

What D’Angelo and Angie Stone’s son says in the wake of his father’s death

Now, their son is sharing how this year has tested him more than any before. “I am grateful for your thoughts and prayers during these very difficult times, as it has been a very rough and sad year for me,” he said in a statement provided to People magazine. I ask that you please continue to keep me in your thoughts as it will not be easy, but one thing that both my parents taught me was to be strong, and I intend to do just that.”

The message comes after the deaths of both of his parents within months of each other.

D’Angelo, born Michael Eugene Archer, was known for redefining soul music with his 1995 debut Brown Sugar, and the critically acclaimed Voodoo in 2000. His impact on the neo-soul movement helped shape the sound of a generation, with tracks like “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” becoming cultural touchstones.

Archer Jr. has not made any further public statements at this time.

D’Angelo had two other younger children, Imani Archer and Morocco Archer, as People reported.

Here’s what a prior statement from the family said

As we previously reported, the D’Angelo Estate said in a prior statement, “The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life…After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, we are heartbroken to announce that Michael D’Angelo Archer, known to his fans around the world as D’Angelo, has been called home, departing this life today, October 14th, 2025. We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind. We ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time but invite you all join us in mourning his passing while also celebrating the gift of song that he has left for the world.”
