‘Boots’ Canceled After One Season At Netflix – Blavity

Netflix has canceled the military comedy-drama series Boots after one season.

The cancellation does come as a bit of a shock, as the series already picked up options for several cast members. Deadline’s Nellie Andreeva reported, “From what I hear, this was not a straightforward cancellation” as the series “delivered respectable ratings and made noise in popular culture” and “had internal support, and Netflix held conversations with Boots studio Sony Pictures Television while analyzing long-tail viewership data.”

Back in August, the cast members who had their options extended were series lead Miles Heizer, as well as Liam Oh, Kieron Moore, Dominic Goodman, Angus O’Brien, Blake Burt and Rico Paris.

Trump’s Pentagon criticized the show because of its themes

Then came the show’s battle with Trump’s Pentagon. The Pentagon’s press secretary called the show “woke garbage.”

“Under President Trump and Secretary [Pete] Hegseth, the U.S. military is getting back to restoring the warrior ethos. Our standards across the board are elite, uniform, and sex neutral because the weight of a rucksack or a human being doesn’t care if you’re a man, a woman, gay, or straight,” the statement from Kingsley Wilson read, per Variety. “We will not compromise our standards to satisfy an ideological agenda, unlike Netflix whose leadership consistently produces and feeds woke garbage to their audience and children.”

When asked about the drama, Heizer told Out magazine, “I was surprised by that one! Especially this show, the message really is about community and people coming together. It has a very positive message. That response is not what I expected, but here we are.”

What was ‘Boots’ about?

The series is based on Greg Cope White’s memoir, The Pink Marine. Series creator Andy Parker serves as co-showrunner with Jennifer Cecil. Norman Lear, who died in 2023, is listed as an executive producer. Other executive producers include ACT III Productions’ Brent Miller, as well as Rachel Davidson, Scott Hornbacher and Peter Hoar. Sony Pictures Television produces for Netflix.

Here’s the official description of the show:

BOOTS is a one-hour comedic drama that delivers an irreverent, off-beat take on the coming-of-age story. Set in the tough, unpredictable world of the 1990s US Marine Corps—when being gay in the military was still illegal—the series follows directionless, closeted Cameron Cope (Heizer) and his best friend Ray McAffey (Oh), the son of a decorated Marine, as they join a diverse group of recruits. Together, this ensemble navigates the literal and metaphorical landmines of boot camp, forging unlikely bonds and discovering their true selves in an environment designed to push them to their limits. With sharp wit and plenty of heart, BOOTS is about friendship, resilience, and finding your place in the world—even when that world seems determined to keep you in line or leave you behind.

Is it possible that the show could be picked up somewhere else?

Also, there is likely no situation where the show could return on another platform for a second season. Because, as Deadline reported, “Because of Netflix’s strict exclusivity terms, it is virtually impossible for an outside studio to shop a series after it has been canceled by the streamer.”
