Black College Basketball Player Ethan Dietz Dies At 20 After Head Injury During Game – Blavity
A sophomore student at Connors State College has died after sustaining an injury during a basketball game. Ethan Dietz was playing in a match against Grayson College in Texas when he was injured and removed from the game. He was hospitalized and died three days later on Nov. 25.

Dietz was going up for a shot under the basket when he was injured inadvertently by an opposing player’s elbow, according to KATV. Sixteen minutes were remaining in the game when the incident occurred. Dietz grabbed his head in his hands and was helped off the floor by two of his teammates.
It is unclear if Dietz received medical treatment during the game. Connors State’s athletic trainers, as well as an assistant coach, were seen checking on him while on the bench.
Dietz returned to the game a few minutes later and was seen holding his head on the floor. He subbed himself out of the game, put a towel on his head and sat out for the remaining time. After a timeout, he did not join his teammates to celebrate. He left the court after one of his teammates helped him out.
A day after the game, Connors State College confirmed Dietz’s injury in a statement, although they did not specify what type of injury he had sustained. The college shared that he had been transported to the hospital to receive care.
Ethan Dietz died three days after injuring his head
Connors State College announced that Dietz had died on the morning of Nov. 25. A cause of death has not been shared as of now.
“It is devastating when such a bright light is taken from us,” Connors State College president Ron Ramming said in a statement. “Ethan exemplified what it means to be a Cowboy, to value hard work and being part of a team. While we are processing our own grief, our hearts go out to his family, friends and teammates.”Head coach Bill Muse lauded his character and talent as a basketball player: “Ethan Dietz was the kind of player a coach always hopes for,” he said. “He was talented athletically and academically and he understood the importance of hard work. If you ever saw him smile, you knew he was all heart. He was a person of character as well as a great teammate. Our hearts and prayers continue to be with Ethan’s family, friends and our team as we process this heartbreaking loss.”Dietz graduated from Vilonia High School in Arkansas before enrolling at Connors State College. He averaged 11 points per game through eight games this season, according to the Associated Press.Connors State College hosted a vigil in his honor on Monday and shared counseling services for students. The institution also canceled several men’s and women’s basketball games the week of Dietz’s death.“Ethan’s loss reminds us all how precious life is and how much those around us impact our lives. As we move through this loss together as a community, let’s be inspired by Ethan’s spirit, friendship and love,” Connors State College wrote in a Facebook statement.
