Alpha Phi Alpha Cleared From Hazing Allegations At Southern University – Blavity

The Beta Sigma Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., which was accused of hazing allegations at Southern University, has now been cleared of any wrongdoing. According to WAFB, the university’s Office of Student Leadership and Engagement announced on Tuesday that the school has now lifted the cease-and-desist order that demanded that the chapter stop all fraternity activities on campus during the fall semester.

The school’s officials announced the findings in a letter to the chapter’s president, stating that the chapter didn’t violate the school’s Code of Conduct or the Greek Life bylaws.

Southern University launched the investigation in October after the chapter was accused of violating Louisiana hazing laws, the school’s policies, and Greek Life guidelines.

What hazing allegations were brought against the chapter

Documents obtained by the WAFB revealed concerning allegations involving women who participated in the chapter’s “Miss Black and Gold” pageant. The accusations stated that the women were forced to perform jumping jacks and other exercises for an extremely long period. WAFB reported that the women were also forced to recite poems and attend a meeting wearing all black, per the documents.

The chapter was forced to miss Homecoming week after the school issued a cease-and-desist order. Members of the chapter were also barred from wearing Alpha Phi Alpha paraphernalia. Additionally, they were blocked from organizing campus events. Now, the fraternity is allowed to return to normal operations following the conclusion of the investigation.

What happened to Caleb Wilson at Southern University?

Southern University was caught up in a high-profile incident earlier this year when 20-year-old student Caleb Wilson died while pledging at the Beta Sigma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Caleb McCray, a 23-year-old student, was identified as one of several people who punched Wilson and other pledgees. He was charged with criminal hazing and manslaughter, according to WFAA.
