ABFF Honors To Celebrate ‘Sinners’ Team, Jennifer Hudson, Damson Idris And Salli Richardson-Whitfield – Blavity

Sinners is taking center stage at the 8th American Black Film Festival (ABFF) Honors.

The event, presented by Nice Crowd, will honor the creative team behind Sinners, including writer, director and producer Ryan Coogler, producers Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian, cinematographer Autumn Durald, costume designer Ruth E. Carter and production designer Hannah Beachler. The special tribute celebrates Coogler’s “bold storytelling” that “continues to shape the landscape of American cinema,” according to the festival. As the festival states, “This creative collective has crafted a work that captures both the power and poetry of the Black experience, marking another landmark in contemporary film.”

This isn’t the only honor taking place at the ABFF Honors. The event will also include awarding Jennifer Hudson the Renaissance Award for hosting The Jennifer Hudson Show as well as for her status as an EGOT-winner and a multiple NAACP and GLAAD honoree. Hudson also released her first holiday album, The Gift of Love, last year. The ABFF Honors Renaissance Award is given to “a trendsetting content creator whose exemplary work contributes to changing perceptions of people of color in the entertainment industry.”

The Gilded Age and Task executive producer Salli Richardson-Whitfield will also be given the Evolution Award, which “pays tribute to an exceptional talent whose creative journey reflects remarkable growth, having achieved success across multiple art forms, while expanding opportunities for others.” Richardson-Whitfield has become the first Black woman nominated for an Emmy for Best Director in a Drama Series for HBO’s Winning Time, which she also executive produced.

Finally, Damson Idris will receive the Horizon Award, which is awarded to “a formidable force in film and television, recognizing their recent achievements and future promise.” Idris made his name in America starring in FX’s Snowfall, and later starred in Apple film F1 opposite Brad Pitt. His upcoming role is as Miles Davis in Miles & Juliette.

Jeff and Nicole Friday on this year’s honorees

Nice Crowd CEO and President Jeff Friday and Nicole Friday said in a statement that the honorees exhibit what the ABFF stands for.

“This year’s honorees each represent the spirit of what ABFF stands for — creativity, excellence, and purpose,” they said. “Ryan Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian have redefined the power of collaboration and vision with Sinners, creating something that speaks to our shared humanity while pushing the boundaries of cinematic storytelling. Jennifer Hudson continues to inspire with her extraordinary talent and authenticity; Salli Richardson-Whitfield has evolved into one of the most dynamic directors and executive producers working in television today; and Damson Idris embodies the brilliance and promise of a new generation. We’re honored to celebrate each of them — artists who remind us why we tell stories: to inspire, to uplift, and to move the culture forward.”

When will the 2025 ABFF Honors take place?

The ABFF Honors will be held on Feb. 16, 2026, at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills. Comedian and author KevOnStage will host.
